"This basin gives to all Hamburg, rich and poor, a never-failing source of pleasure and interest. The many boat lines afford cool breathing trips during the hot months; these different lines run to different suburbs at a slight cost, and the trips are full of charm and interest, for the constant change of view brings continual pleasure; there are no dull miles in any of them; then the myriads of rowboats, sailboats, steam or naphtha launches all add to it. ... This outer basin is lined with villas of Hamburg's millionaires, promenades, driveways and gardens, and the land slopes down to the water.
